CURTIS ISLAND LIGHT - Maine
Location: Camden Harbor Entrance - Penobscot Bay - Camden
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 52 feet
Year Established: 1835
Curtis Island marks the approach to Camden Harbor. It is a quaint 5-acre island, predominantly wooded with a clear area at the southeastern end where the Curtis Island lighthouse proudly stands. It was established in 1835, and the current 25-foot cylindrical brick tower dates to 1896. It is owned by the Town of Camden and is not open to the public. It was automated in 1972 and is currently solar-powered. The light station complex includes the lighthouse, a keeper's house, an oil house, and a toolshed, all of which are managed by a town-hired caretaker. In a heartwarming turn of events, local citizens rallied in 1970 to have the light turned over to the town, preventing its auction by the United States Coast Guard. Today, Curtis Island and its lighthouse are not only a navigational aid but also a cherished town park, reflecting the community's dedication to preserving their maritime heritage.
